Melinda McGoldshoe is a young ghost who lives in a remote Scottish castle with her uncle Albert and her aunt Greta. It’s the perfect set-up, as far as Melinda is concerned – but Uncle Albert has other ideas. There’s nobody to scare in this deserted castle: how is Melinda ever going to learn how to haunt properly?
So he sends her, accompanied by Greta, to stay with their descendants in Switzerland. The Goldschühli family run a castle hotel where there are plenty of guests to spook. Twins Jost and Kurt (Jokurt for short), the sons of the hotel proprietor, are the only ones who are not frightened of Melinda – which is a good thing too, since the three of them soon become firm friends and work together to save the hotel from disaster!
- An appealing theme – ghosts – which is appropriate for the target age group without being scary
- Very funny: a hotel in the Swiss Alps serves a a boarding school for a ghost from the Scottish Highlands
- The three protagonists are easy for both boys and girls to relate to
